Recently, there have been proposals to construct major roads through gazetted national parks (Nairobi and Nakuru), which would result in these parks becoming smaller. What are your views on this issue?
for sure the country has started growing fast. I think the thing the government need to do is plan better; think ahead on how to promote development and still take care of natural resourses.
Some of these roads are inevitable much as we want to conserve our precious wildlife. What the government needs to do is ensure proper management of infrastructural projects so that both humans and wildlife are not inconvenienced. In Nairobi, the Southern By-pass is inevitable in order to de-congest the CBD and the nightmare that is Mombasa and Uhuru Highway because of long distance trucks that have no business getting into town. Re-designing the route will cause massive losses to owners of buildings that will have to be demolished. The Government finds itself in a tricky situation. It must strike a balance to ensure wildlife in the Nairobi National park does not suffer due to the proposed by-pass route.
With the current news on 6 dead lions, it seems the problems of wildlife in kenya are major. Will we think of the dead animals, the community or the road? hard choises to make. Which takes priority?
Now that is a good point. I hope they will put this in mind when developing the bypass. Our animals attract foreign business through tourism. I wonder if we will get to a point where the world comes to watch our roads?
